Believe again, hope again by Hannah Ng’uni

Wait! Before you ‘cancel’ whole of 2020, new beginnings are not just limited to the start of a new year, this year is not over therefore it is not too late for a new beginning.

Safe to say the lockdown period has not been without its challenges and taught many some life lessons. Certainly, for me, adapting to change healthily has been one among many. So much has changed so quickly, most of it out of my control mixed in with moments of feeling overwhelmed by it all. Especially when the end of this virus does not seem to be in sight, at least from the physical. But I choose to put my hope in the Lord. You can too, you will not be disappointed (Romans 5:1-5).

Psalms 31
24 Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart,
All you who hope in the Lord.

I feel how one navigates the now and approaches the next chapter will depend on mindset, perspective, and attitude. Two people in the same situation could have two different thought process for e.g. one thinks ‘I cannot wait for this to end and get back to normal again’ and the other, ‘this has happened, now living the new normal, how can I move forward’. It would seem the former is living in the here and now, the latter is looking beyond the now.

How the present situation is viewed may either cause one to remain stagnant, looking back wishing for the familiar or urge one to adjust and adopt new ways so to keep moving forward. Think about it, though things may have been on halt or disrupted, the seconds on the clock continue to tick…ponder that for a second.

With that in mind, I ask myself, how many more seconds need to tick by before realising there is a reason for my existence, a God ordained destiny for my life, a purpose to be fulfilled and it will not just happen whilst I’m sat wishing for ‘normal’ again?!. Perhaps you can ask yourself the same question.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 Do not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth.
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert.

We are not designed to stay the same, but to grow and progress even through life’s challenges because life will always happen, but we cannot move forward looking back.

So, in relation to self-development, ministry, visualising, pursuing goals and positive change, growth this pandemic should not stop you, this pandemic should not stop me. Yes, plans may have been interrupted, the experience of loss (of any kind) too great, faith shaken, hopeless feeling or motivation gone but I encourage you to believe God again, hope again, dream again, visualise again! A new beginning awaits you! The world awaits you!

So, do not ‘cancel’ twenty-twenty just yet, you can still achieve plenty!

Quick tips on how to stay Active

Its Monday and I’m waking up to the buzzing sound of my 7:00 am alarm. I roll over to switch it off and the sun rays shining through my curtains make me quickly pull the duvet over my head! I stay curled up in bed for a few minutes. “I really should get some blackout curtains” I say to myself. Anyway, it’s a lovely sunny morning which is rare in Manchester, so this motivates me to go for a run before I start work.

Regardless of the type of exercise you’re into, I think we can all agree that motivation, or lack thereof, is one of the biggest barriers to our fitness goals.

Of course, there are days when getting out of bed to work out is the last thing I want to do. Do you ever watch a YouTube home exercise video thinking I can do this, but instead of following along, you are just lying in bed or sitting on the sofa? Yes, I know…me too! There are a lot of articles and videos out there telling us how to work out and the importance of exercising, but we still struggle to maintain it or even start! As Apostle Paul wrote in the book of Romans 7:15 – “For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do“. Sometimes skipping a workout feels worse than just doing the 5km run or going for the gym class, the guilt is real.

To help us stay active and get over our individual fitness barriers, I thought I would focus and share from my own experiences on what not to do in order to maintain your workout routines. I’ll also share a few tips on how to stay motivated. Hopefully you’ll find one that you can adapt to suit you…so Leggo!

Don’t Set Unrealistic Goals
‘Start with the end goal in mind’ is probably a phrase you might have heard; This helps to maintain the motivation you need to achieve your goals. However, when you’re setting your goals don’t set goals you know are too difficult to achieve based on your current level. I used to struggle to drink at least 2 glasses of water in a day, so for me to say I’m going to drink 2 litres of water was just setting myself up for failure every day.

Set SMART goals instead – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely goals. Looking at my water situation above, I bought myself a time marked 500 ml water bottle and my goal in the first week was to have at least 2 bottles (1 litre).

If you struggle to stick to a workout routine,

  • Set yourself a weekly routine that you’ll enjoy – switch it up if you’re not enjoying it, it’s not set in stone!
  • Time yourself, work out for a specific time and try to stick to the set time for the first few days even if you feel like you can keep going. We will look at overdoing it in the next section
  • If you miss your workout, hold yourself accountable, how do you plan on making it up for the missed session?
  • Reward yourself when you stick to it!

SMART goals help you to focus your effort and increase your chances of achieving your goal.

Don’t Push Yourself Too Much

I learned this lesson the hard way, stop overdoing it! It’s good to challenge yourself because you’ll benefit from it, Romans 8:18 – “For I consider that our present suffering are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us“. I use this verse for perseverance.

It’s lockdown, I’m working from home, a notification pops up on my phone inviting me to join a running challenge…this was the beginning of an ongoing monthly challenge with a group of friends. I planned out how many km I’ll do each week in order to complete the challenge. A few days in, some people in the challenge had already covered what I planned to cover in a week. This is when I started doing 20km, 15km in a day to keep up with the competition. My knees paid the price and I’m still recovering.

  • Be disciplined with your workouts, don’t let competition or the feeling of guilt push you to do more than you can handle – know your limits
  • Plan in rest days and take the time you need to rest
  • If you’re injured, ease back into it and keep it simple until you recover, exercising through injuries will only make it worse

Don’t Struggle Alone

‘I work better alone’, ‘everyone else is busy’, ‘it’s difficult to find a time that works for everyone’ – I understand that coordinating workouts can be a pain but having someone or a group of people to exercise with will keep you motivated when you’re struggling to be keep up.

Some of the activities I like doing to stay active are not everyone’s preference such as hiking, but because I enjoy it, I’m self-motivated to go out alone. However, when it comes to full body workout, I need all the support from others I can get so I go to gym classes or join online sessions with friends.

  • Get the people around you to help you achieve your fitness goals, it is easier when you have someone holding you accountable
  • Try inclusive fun activities that are suitable for your family and friends. When you’re enjoying it, it becomes less of an obligation and time well spent with your loved ones
  • ‘Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing’1 Thessalonians 5:11

I would like to challenge you to think of one thing that you’ll change right now to help you stay active!

Simple tips for eating healthy

As we are spending more time at home its easy for us to just grab a snack or that drink. Regardless of whether you are spending more time at home our bodies are still temples of the Holy spirit, God still dwells in us and would love us to look after his most prized possession.

We shall not live by bread alone but by every word. Prayer reading the word are the most important things, but what we eat also plays an important role in our health and well being. Paul said beloved I pray you proper and be in health even as your soul prospers

Here are my simple tricks on following a healthy lifestyle on a budget:

High fats, high sugars are not needed in the diet or beneficial. If you decide to eat them, have small amounts less frequently.

Fruits and vegetables

Include these in your day and your meals, they provide vitamins, minerals and fibre.

*tinned and frozen fruit and vegetables also count to your 5 a day and they are great as they last long too.

Another way is buying fruit and vegetables from the reduced isles then chopping them up and freezing them.

*Portions: Aim for 2 handfuls or ½ your plate to be fill with vegetables, And handful of fruit as a snack / dessert

Carbohydrate

I know it is currently trendy to cut out or limit your carb intake. However, carbs are very important for providing energy, fibre and some minerals. It is important to base your meals with these

*Aim for a handful of starchy carbs as a portion 3 times a day or ¼ of your plate

Choose whole grain options were possible as these provide fibre and keep you fuller for longer.

Examples of carbs include (potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, cous cous, maize, plantain, oats ,  )

Protein

Beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and meat free alternatives

Try to include two portions of fish each week, one of which should be an oily fish (darker skinned), for example: mackerel, trout, sardines or kippers (if you are following a pant based diet walnuts , linseed , chia seed , soya beans are great omega 3 sources)

Tips: – avoid frying if you can

Remove excess fat or get lean options

Remove skin from chicken

*Portion is a palm size or ¼ of your plate at a meal.

Dairy and alternatives

Great sources for calcium. Aim for 3 portions a day

A portion is: –

a small pot of yoghurt

1/3 pint of milk

a small matchbox size piece of cheese.

Fats and oils

Choose low fat options of polyunsaturated or monounsaturated spreads and cooking oils such as olive oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower or vegetable oils

As a rule, put a thumb size amount of bread

Tablespoon of oil in cooking

Avoid oils with high saturated fat more than 5g/100g as these increase your risk for heart disease (pastries, coconut oil, palm oil, butter, ghee, cakes, ice creams)

Sugar

Small amounts can be added to sweeten foods. However added sugars are not essential to health.  “Free sugars” which are found in table sugar, glucose, honey, syrups and unsweetened fruit juices.

As a guide on food labels

High sugar = 22.5g per 100g,

 low-sugar food =less than 5g per 100g.

high-sugar drink = more than 11.25g per 100ml,

 low-sugar drink contains less than 2.5g.

*You only need 30g or 7tsp of sugar a day*

Choose some nutritious and healthy snacks

Carrots, cucumber, celery and hummus

Handful of nuts

Pot of Greek yoghurt

Handful dried fruit

Fresh fruit

Small bag of rice cakes

1 slice wholegrain toast with thinly spread nut butter

1 boiled egg

Apple with nut butter

It is important to ensure your daily intake is adequate for your personal nutritional needs and also  manageable.

Exercise

Also aim for 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 times a week that makes your heart race a little.

Enjoying every moment

Looking back to the start of lock down I was in shock and taken aback to what was happening around the world. Lock down has been challenging but fun. I am a positive person and optimistic, always looking for ways to enjoy every situation even if it seems like there is nothing to be happy about. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to be home with my family. My kids are very happy to spend time with mummy. I have had time to reflect on so many areas of my home and family life.

This crazy time has changed our normal routine. We are creating routines daily. Be encouraged to depend on God each day. This is the time our faith can grow when things seem to be challenging.

During quarantine we have focused on creating a loving, comfortable and warm home by:

Praying:

Praying is a powerful tool to have and connects you to God. Through prayer God is able to speak and reveal things to you. Start creating a daily prayer habit and also if possible pray with your family. I have used this time to draw closer to God and as a family we have been doing more devotions and praying together as a family. The bible tells us to ‘’Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you’’. You can pray when you wake up, at meal times, bedtime and even when you are out shopping. God is always moving and hears our prayers and He is able to change situations. The bible says in 2 chronicles 7:14 ‘’ If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land’’. If we pray and seek God’s face and turn from sin, He will forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

My DIY designs

Get Creative:

I have a passion for art and have been doing a lot more artwork than I ever did before lockdown. I have also gained a new passion for interior design and DIY.  There are lots of resources online which I have found very useful. This time has brought out my hidden talents which has been set aside. I have been encouraged to get creative. What ever your passion and talents is do not push to one side but motivate yourself to use it for your benefit and others. If your passion is blogging for example keep at it. Start a new business or a new course.  You are authentic you can do it. Philipians 4:13 says ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’’. It is important we use whatever talents God has given us even in the mist of chaos.

Get outside:

I have tried keeping fit as I know it is good for my body’s wellbeing and mental health.  It has been hard for me to exercise but I have motivated myself to go for walks. I do have an exercise machine which has been in my storage cupboard for a while and each time I open the cupboard it steers me at the face and I say to myself I need to get this out. Yes I procrastinate. To be fair exercise machines are not my thing. I prefer going for walks and dancing. I absolutely love dancing. It really doesn’t matter if you can’t dance as long as you have the passion for it. My family loves been outdoors especially our kids. My kids enjoy playing outdoors, exploring the world around them. It is soothing to have some fresh air especially now it is getting very warm. I am currently learning how to ride a bike and it has been fun to say the least. My eldest is an expert and she doesn’t understand why mummy keeps falling off and says keep up mummy.  

Keep in touch

Love your neighbours and keep in touch with friends and family. It is a good idea to check on people especially at this difficult time. I am grateful to have my friends and family who check on me from time to time.  When lockdown started I sent letters out to my elderly neighbours to check on them. They appreciated this gesture and sent letters back to let us know how they were.  During Easter the kids got chocolates from our neighbour. It was very thoughtful of my neighbour to share chocolates at Easter. Even at this time its important we show love and care to others. Mark 12: 31 says ‘’Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these’’.

As lock down starts to ease we should keep our faith in Christ and be prayerful. In every situation we find ourselves make the most out of it and ultimately give thanks to God. Psalm 107:1 ‘’ Give thanks to the lord, for he is good; his love endures forever’’. In the meantime I am still hoping to get that exercise machine out.

God In the midst of Chaos

This song brings a message of hope that inspite of it all, God is still working. 

In the chaos, the pandemic, lockdown, uncertainty, God is still working. 

I had a conversation with a friend in March, when the lockdown fully hit Lagos, Nigeria. The funny part of this call was that I reached out to encourage her and it ended up being the opposite. Whilst talking, she said Esther, even in the chaos, God is still speaking and that hit me. It’s so easy to get over whelmed with the news, updates and scary happenings around us that we fail to hear what God is saying at the time. 

Coincidentally or rather intentionally, because God is always intentional, I stumbled on this song on Youtube – Way Maker | Steffany Gretzinger | John Wilds | Jesus Image Choir | Jesus ’19 (Yes, I love to listen to music and work) and it had the same reassuring message; even though we don’t feel it…. God is still working. 

Although we pray and we hope, it feels like COVID-19 is bent on becoming part of our lives… it feels like the darkness won’t go away…. it feels like the uncertainties will keep piling up…… it feels like our jobs are not returning…. this is just a kind reminder that God stays working. He neither sleeps nor slumbers… 24/7 God. 

So, I’ll just share a bit of my #LockdownChronicles to highlight a few things we can do now and also help us keep our hope alive. 

Working in this period has been “Amazing” … yes, I’m one of the few that has screamed ‘WORKING FROM HOME IS A SCAM’, yet almost every day, I stay grateful that I still have a job regardless of the pandemic and job losses. You may not have similar experience, but the lesson here is to stay GRATEFUL…. No matter how small you think it is, stay grateful and watch as your hope stays alive. 

I allowed myself breathe in this season, yes, I took free online courses (actually just 2) and that was on my terms. I chose to, I was not pressured to do so by social media or motivational posts on being lazy if you do not take an online course in this lockdown. Yes, I finished a novel and I have been on the other for a month plus now. Lesson? Breathe, Smell the roses, Be-You-To- The-Full (Be Beautiful), and yes, please take that class or read that book…. but not under social media induced pressure. 

Lastly, I did and I’m still determined to study the word and pray more – to do that, I joined a number of prayer chains on WhatsApp and Telegram to stay prayed up through the day and I joined a couple of other spiritual exercises – Worship and Lounge every Saturday by Authentic 

City Church and When Friends Pray on IG . The question you might ask is do I meet all targets? Nooooo…. but I pray for help when I feel weak and I go through the day again because hey! God is always working and part of that work is the help He provides through the Holy spirit. Lesson? It’s a great time to grow spiritually… one day at a time. 

Bonus Tip: Just because you read till the end…. You get a bonus tip…. Nothing beats having positive people around! I wrote a story this season because a friend pushed me to and I’m grateful for that…. Surround yourself with the right people, sounds cliché, right? Well that never gets old.

I stood in front of the mirror the other day, trying to fix my crown
It felt a little too big for my head, I said to the woman before me
“You always wear nice shoes, and carry the latest handbags.
Everyone seems to like you and you seem to like everyone.
You always walk with your shoulders high, oozing of confidence.
Your face is the production of a great make up artist,
Even though you never really claim to be one.

You never miss an event as long as it is labeled “Spirit-filled”. It is yours to attend.
You speak the word like it was written for you,
You breathe verses and scripture, men adore you- women want to be you.

But do they know you?

You say its too bland it needs saving,
Your face isn’t the only part of you you’ve made up.
Perfectly constructed, baked to the tilt
Your life.

You’ve used the right kind of foundation, not a shade lighter, or darker.

Perfect. Church girl, Breathe girl.

“you have the voice of an angel”, the brothers worship the ground you walk on.

“Take a look at me I’m a wonder, it doesn’t matter what you see now”

It doesn’t matter what they see now?

Is what they see, who you really are?

You have covered up your insecurities with the best concealer,

Stay alert! Tips on making your Home Quarantine Proof

For such a time as this, at the beginning of the quarantine, no one knew the extent of the quarantine, no one envisaged that the lock down was going to be for this length of time. Relationships and marriages are going to be affected especially those that are already having issues, as it said that familiarity brings contempt

There are few things I would suggest every Christian lady can do to foster bonding and unity of purpose. The very first thing is time  management , this can be achieved by the right allocation of time to events and programs in their order of priority. When this is done, efforts should be made to stick to the scheduled time.

Communication should be given great consideration because this fosters bonding, I mean couples should find time to discuss issues of mutual interest, it could be sports, fashion, people and places , politics, current affairs even business, whatever the topic of interest. It should be discussed with great passion, each person giving the other person the opportunity to express their own view. Ladies by nature are the chatty ones, we like to talk, talk and talk, that does not mean that we are talkative, it’s just our natural disposition, so if your partner does not want to talk as much , it does not mean that he doesn’t love you any more, it only means that he is the quiet type.

Great time for spiritual growth, set a  bible challenge, read Christian books from anointed and proven ministers of the gospel, create a strong family altar morning and evening, if you have  children, make a time table and get every one  taking turns to preach , pray and lead in praise and worship. This time of the pandemic is a time to build strong Christian values in the family.

This is also a time to explore the culinary prowess of your partner, explore recipes from all over the world, take turns to cook so that you do not get overwhelmed by house chores leading to grumbling and complaining. Remember ,before now , every one goes out to work, comes back and goes to bed, that is no longer the case , people stay at home from morning till night, now you get to see all the flaws, you  get to see that your children or even your spouse has not taken their bath, not brushed their teeth etc. ,this will  result to a lot of tension in the house, Romans 12:10 says Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honour giving preference to one another.

Do not allow strife to spring up in your home because this will open up the door way for confusion and every evil work of the enemy, James 3:16. As much as you can, maintain an atmosphere  of peace and love in the home through tolerance, speak gently to your spouse  not disrespectfully.

Lastly for the single ladies, this is a great time to invest in your future, study, look out for some free online courses which can enhance your C.V.  Study and meditate on the word of God for revelation and encounter with the Holy spirit, I pray this few word will help someone, thanks.

Faith in Quarantine

Remember at the start of this year all the excitement about 2020? Yay we’ve lived to see the start of a new decade, it’s ‘twentyplenty’, it’s going to be amazing! I felt the same, begun the new year in church, danced my way in past midnight. Prayed and wrote down what I am trusting God for, wrote down the negative thoughts and attitudes I did not want to carry over and binned them, literally! Felt motivated, my faith was built up by the word that night, declared boldly ‘it’s my year of growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ’ (2 Peter 3:17 NKJV).

Fast-forward to over 2 months later, life as we knew it changed. The coronavirus pandemic took over. With the word ‘unprecedented’ being thrown around, daily breaking news of the virus spreading and death toll rising, empty shelves in supermarkets, forwarded messages/posts with conspiracy theories (p.s. very irritating), it is no wonder fear lingers in the air. And now we are in quarantine, lock down. Sounds like a movie, doesn’t it?! So how am I keeping the faith during this period?

Not going to pretend that I have not had moments were fear crept in after watching the news or a video on social media. Thinking, what if I or a family member catches the virus? The mind is very powerful, dwell on a thought long enough and it starts to become. I’m sure you can think of an example of this in your own life. The point is, dwelling on that thought – positive or negative – is a choice, it is not forced on me and doesn’t have to stay.

I have learnt in my faith journey that that I possess a beautiful God-given ability to capture those thoughts that do not line up with Gods’ Word and teach them to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 NLT). So do you as a believer in Christ. How awesome is that?! Easier said than done though, must admit. What is helping me is examining my thoughts and feelings against the list in Philippians 4:8 (AMP) and shifting my focus from fear and anxiety on to what is true, right, pure and wholesome etc. It is an on-going process.

So, what does that look like practically?

Romans 12:2 (NLT)

2 Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

By letting God change my thinking, another version says ‘renewing your mind’ through reading the word (Bible), listening to sound preaching, praise and worship music. Not only do I find that this helps me draw closer to God but also helps strengthen my faith because “…faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17 NKJV).  Also helps to keep my focus on God and in turn I find that I’ve got peace even amidst the chaos, panic and fear. Again, it is an on-going process and I choice I make daily.

Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)

3 You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.

I truly believe Jesus wants us to have faith, He wants us to have peace, He wants us to trust Him even when everything around us says otherwise. He is saying, ‘in this quarantine period, where is your faith at? Where are your thoughts at?’… selah. Until the next article…Jesus loves you and so do I 😊
