Importance of Memory

By walinase Chunda

Today we are talking about the importance of Memory. We are reading from Deuteronomy‬ ‭6:10-13.

““So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build, houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant—when you have eaten and are full— then beware, lest you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name.”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭6:10-13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

At this point the Children of Israel were on a journey to the promise land. We see here a promise from our Father that He is going to bless them and take them out of captivity, the only requirement is that they should fear God and serve him. The same is true for us, God will bless us so we can serve him better. In the moments when we are trusting God for something, we usually find service easier. We go into an implicit contract with God where we start going to church everyday, praying, fasting often and so on. But the issue for most comes in when God accomplishes what he said He would do, we then get carried away with pleasures of this world.

This reminds me of the story of the leper who came back to Jesus, to thank Him for healing him. When Jesus saw this he said:

“So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭17:17-19‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Coming back to God to serve Him and remember Him for what he has done is a form of Faith, and as shown in the Hebrews 11:6:

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Our memory of God is important – it propels us to keep going from season to season. Our memory is what builds up our Faith and enables us to Love Him better. It’s our memory in God that enables us to obey His word and overcome temptation.

Today I am praying that God will reveal to you anything that is preventing you from experiencing serving God as you ought to. Take this time to write down the good things that God has done for you and use this time to write down how you can serve God. I.e. will you join the hospitality team at your church, give to charity, buy presents for the less fortunate etc.
