Created to make a difference

You wouldn’t believe the excitement I had when the steam mop I had been eyeing was reduced. I love household gadgets; anything to make work around the home easier. I quickly opened it skimmed through the instructions and turned the mop on. To my dismay, the steam didn’t come out. Then it dawned on me to read the manual just in case there was a step I missed.

There are important steps to your life’s purpose and design found in the bible. Furthermore, the bible showcases how you can build a legacy.

Genesis 1:26 says Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

This verse gives us a glimpse of the type of legacy we should aspire for based on the content in us. I have heard it said most humans die without maximising their fullest potential; they live only achieving a segment of all that God called them to be. I talked about this in the opening of our legacy series, when my mum passed away I realised that I was created to live a meaningful life. To become more than just a funeral memory but to live on in the works I started, in my children in my community. The benefits of building a legacy became apparent because I realised the life am living, the networks I have are all a result of the steps my mum took.

The concept of Legacy can bring two types of emotions – one of fear that I might not enjoy now because am focusing on the future or apathy I don’t have children that I wish to leave anything for so why bother. Psalm 8:5 says – You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor. This verse reminds us how much value God has placed in us that our fear and apathy are only hindering us from experiencing that which God has created us for, in this generation and the next one.

We see God outlining the characteristics he placed in us. He created us in his image that is to have the ability to create, our intellectual capabilities reflect the image of God. He created us in His likeness, James 3: 9 states – With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. Thus to confirm that we have been made in the likeness of God.  we have dominion over the fish, birds, and livestock which means we are to be good stewards of the land God has given us. in looking at God’s agenda for humankind we see that we are not living our creator’s design if we don’t reflect the love and beauty of God if we don’t value the life around us. Therefore our legacy must reflect the image, likeness of God and it must show stewardship over creation.

Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
